THE boss of the National Wax Museum has told how four artists will be tasked with creating the new Sinead O’Connor likeness after the previous effort was branded “hideous”. Paddy Dunning says staff are being tortured by visitors asking to see the disastrous Sinead waxwork which went viral last month , but he refuses to put it on display . The Sinead dummy sparked outrage on her anniversary , with her surviving brother describing it as “hideous and looking nothing like her”.
He also compared it to “something out of Thunderbirds”. Pictures of the mannequin went viral, appearing in newspapers around the world, prompting a stampede to the famous museum on Dublin’s Westmoreland Street. Museum boss Paddy told The Irish Sun: “We get tourists asking to see it, every hour of every day, but we tell them it’s not for viewing.
“This has become our most famous waxwork since the National Wax Museum opened in 1983 — but we won’t ever put it on display again.” The museum chief is moving forward with a new Sinead waxwork which will involve the O’Connor family. Paddy said: “We will be asking four artists to make submissions, with the likeness everyone agrees on turned into our Sinead O’Connor.
It’s very important we get this right after what’s happened.” He also revealed that artist PJ Heraghty, who created the original likeness, will not be involved. Paddy said: “PJ is retired now so that wasn’t going to be an option.
He has done some fantastic work for the National Wax Museum. “The waxworks of John Paul II, and Liam Neeson in Star Wars, which PJ created for us are superb.” PJ had told The Irish Sun he sensed trouble when he was hired to do the job.
He said: “No I didn’t want to do Sinead O’Connor. That was the gut feeling I had and I wish I listened to it. “I just knew it was going to be problematic to capture somebody as beautiful as Sinead O’Connor.
” The Mayo man said he also had less time than normal to come up with the Sinead waxwork for an unveiling on her anniversary on July 26. Coverage of the waxwork’s unveiling sparked Sinead’s brother John O’Connor to call Joe Duffy’s Liveline show. He told the host: “I just didn’t think it looked like her at all.
“I thought it was hideous. I was shocked. “I thought it looked like something between a mannequin and something out of the Thunderbirds.
