New Christmas scrubs worn by volunteers at Perth Children’s Hospital are hoping to bring a little more joy to children that have to go in for surgery over the festive season. The bright blue scrubs featuring fairy penguins enjoying a Christmas day at the beach were designed by Perth artist Cate Rose, who had her work turned into scrubs when she won a competition by fashion brand Gorman. Ms Rose decided to donate some of the festive scrubs to PCH volunteers in the theatre ward after volunteering for Radio Lollipop at the former Princess Margaret Hospital.
“I used to be a volunteer at PMH for over a decade and I’ve got quite a strong connection with this hospital and I just felt that this is the perfect place to add a bit of happiness to some people’s lives,” she said. “It’s just fantastic that because I had the connection to the volunteers that the hospital decided to give them to the volunteers. “I’m just hoping that it can distract people and make them smile.
” Ms Rose said she decided on fairy penguins as she wanted to feature an Australian Christmas. “I like the penguins and because it was an Australian Christmas I wanted the scrubs to have an Australian theme,” she said. “The fairy penguin is an Australian bird and they are going to the beach, which is what we do in Australia for Christmas.
“I wanted it to be a bit of fun so people could look at it and just see different things.” For Dolores Pevarell, the new scrubs are a nice change from her .
