On Sept. 1, Platte County residents can get a taste of the Wild Plum — not an actual plum, but a bed and breakfast in Platte Center — for its fourth annual PlumFest. This year, they're bringing back the things people have liked in the past, plus some new names in the musical entertainment category, with doors opening at 3:30 p.

m. and everything actually starting at 4 p.m.

SideStep, who play country and rock music at events all over Nebraska and the Midwest at large, return with a new addition: The Expressions, who primarily play in Iowa but get to Nebraska on occasion. "We're actually having a double headliner this year with SideStep and then we're bringing in Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Famers The Expressions out of northwest Iowa," Wild Plum Bed and Breakfast Marketing Director Christina Macken said. "They've been together as a band since 1967 and have played all over Iowa, Okoboji, towns, functions, fairs for the last 50-plus years.

" The event is something of a family matter, Macken said, as owner Belinda Macken has previously brought in her family to help, such as her son's brewery. This year, his daughters will run a tent at the event, alongside HWY 14 Brewing Company, Junta Winery out of Seward and Capitol View from Roca. With the $40 advance ticket, participants get eight drink tastings.

The day of PlumFest, tickets are $50 at the door for the same. As far as food offerings go, returning favorite and Duncan Ribfest winner Borer's BBQ will be there alongside the new Howard's Holy Hoagies, based in Humphrey. "The only influence outside of Nebraska is The Expressions, one of our headliners this year.

But typically we are showcasing Nebraska beer, Nebraska wine and Nebraska entities," Macken said. The event originally started as a way to showcase the bed and breakfast at 30429 257th Ave., and has gathered quite a crowd of attendees, over 250 in recent years.

The property is rather large and beautiful, she said, but since it is rather remote, they started looking at ways to bring people in. The massive fire pit has been a big draw, converted from a pool years ago. To remove the liability and maintenance concerns with a pool, it was filled in and turned into a gathering place within the bed and breakfast's grounds.

"This is just our opportunity to showcase our venue, our estate, so that people can learn more about what we do. We're a bed and breakfast. We also host events, but we want the surrounding communities to come and see what we're all about and just enjoy the day of wine, beer, fun, friendship and music, for sure," Macken said.
