Arne Slot loves pop music. From the Beatles to Bruce Springsteen, the new Liverpool boss is such a sucker for a good tune that he once went to a rock festival just days before leading Feyenoord into the Europa Conference League Final. Slot is a regular gig-goer.

He never misses the Amstel Live event in Rotterdam - even when Jose Mourinho's Roma are on the horizon. It is only a matter of time until he turns up at the famous Cavern Club to see where the Fab Four first thrilled their fans. According to those who know him best, there are only three things that matter more to the Dutchman than music: his family, friends and football.

Ironic then that when Slot arrived on Merseyside to succeed Jurgen Klopp earlier this summer, he decided to go solo. Wife Mirjam, daughter Isa and son Joep remained in Holland while the 45-year-old threw himself fully into the task of fine-tuning Klopp’s heavy metal style into a philosophy that is based on controlling the rhythm and tempo of games. Joep is a promising amateur player in Zwolle.

It’s likely that the band will be back together when Slot takes charge of Liverpool at Anfield for the first time in the Premier League . And although he is not a man prone to showing his emotions, it will be a proud moment when the Kop breaks into ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ in the moments before kick-off. Liverpool’s anthem has always been one of Slot’s favourites.

The song was performed for him in tribute by a local singer when he guided Feyenoord to their 16th Eredivisie title in 2023 - and was belted out by Slot himself when the club threw him a farewell party in May. Most of the 3,500 people in Slot’s tiny home village of Bergentheim have become Liverpool fans since the local-boy-made-good was appointed Reds’ manager. Slot inherited the coaching gene from his father, Arend, who was in charge of non-league clubs like Bergentheim, HHC, DOS37 and Bruchterveld when the new Liverpool boss was a young boy.

How will Arne Slot do as Liverpool manager? Share your thoughts in the comments below Slot senior explained: “When I was a coach, my wife wanted a bit of peace and quiet on a Saturday afternoon, so I took Arne along to my games. “In the pre-match talk with the players he always wanted to sit in the corner of the dressing room. Arne would only be six or seven and I used to tell him he could go outside and kick a ball about, but he insisted on staying because he wanted to know everything.

He even sat next to me in the dug-out. “Arne can become extremely excited and happy for his players, but he will keep it inside and never go crazy. Look at the way he lets his teams play.

It’s the kind of football we all want to see. Beautiful matches, no hurly burly.” Mum Fennie added: “I am so immensely proud of Arne.

I am also proud of my other three kids, Edwin, Jakko and Gerlinde, but what Arne has achieved in football is so special. In fact, it’s magic. “Everyone has gone mad.

Across the road lives a lady of 80 years. She turned up with a big bunch of flowers to congratulate me. The entire village is supporting Arne and are excited about every game he coaches.

‌ “Arne has always been a family person. On the day of winning the league with Feyenoord he had so much going on. But it was also mother’s day - and the first thing he did that morning was send me a lovely message.
