, International Airlines Group (IAG), and Singapore Airlines (SIA). The agreement, witnessed by Singapore’s Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Finance, Chee Hong Tat, establishes a collaborative effort to drive forward groundbreaking aviation projects. The global aviation industry has shown a robust recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic, with air travel demand projected to surge over the coming decades.

According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), passenger volumes are expected to double by 2040, bringing significant growth opportunities for nations, businesses, and individuals. To meet this rising demand, airports worldwide must adapt by enhancing their operations, particularly through the use of technology and innovation to address constraints in capacity and manpower. Recognizing the need for transformation, CAAS is establishing the International Aviation Lab, in collaboration with major global aircraft manufacturers, airport operators, ground service providers, airlines, and research institutions.

This unique initiative aims to foster end-to-end innovation in airport operations, encompassing everything from aircraft design improvements to standardization across manufacturers to enhance automation processes. The lab will also work on optimizing the coordination between airline and ground operations. ICAI will serve as the programme manager, tasked with overseeing the lab’s planning and execution.

Over the next two years, the MOU partners will collaborate to establish the lab by launching joint research initiatives, developing roadmaps, and co-creating projects while sharing expertise and resources. A series of industry workshops will be held to identify and prioritize potential projects, with Singapore serving as the testing ground for solutions that could be applied globally to address critical challenges faced by airports. Potential projects include: This initiative is set to drive major advancements in airport operations, positioning Singapore and its partners at the forefront of aviation innovation.
