Mangaluru : The surgical superspecialty building of the Wenlock District Hospital in the city will be inaugurated at 3 pm on Aug 15. Hospital superintendent and district surgeon Dr Jecintha D’Souza told reporters here on Tuesday, that the work on the building was taken up by Mangaluru Smart City Limited at a cost of Rs 56 crore. In addition, the Rs 7 crore under the Smart City project was used for procuring advanced machines.

The state govt has also released Rs 2 crore, and KMC has also provided equipment worth Rs 4 crore to the superspecialty building, she said, adding that the foundation for the surgical superspecialty building was laid in 2020. The seven-storey building with a plinth area of 1,65,000sqft has 250 beds. Presently, four floors of the building have been completed.



The ground floor will have a cath lab and radiology section, while the ground floor will have a 15-bed emergency treatment wing, eight beds of emergency ICU, endoscopy, and emergency operation theatres. The first floor has a 60-bed ENT and urology OT wards. The second floor will have 70-bed neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, and ophthalmology surgery wards.

The third and fourth floors will have five each modular operation theatres, 10 beds for pre-surgery ward, and 15 beds for post-surgery wards, Dr Jecintha said. District in-charge minister Dinesh Gundu Rao will inaugurate the new building, while legislative assembly speaker UT Khader, urban development minister Byrathi Suresh, and Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyasa Kamath will be the guests. The Wenlock District Hospital, which was opened in 1848, gets an average of three lakh outpatients and 30,000 inpatients annually.

An average of 10,000 surgeries are performed in a year.
