Saturday, August 24, 2024 Brace yourselves, Hawaii ! A double dose of tropical trouble is heading your way as Tropical Storm Hone and Hurricane Gilma are poised to impact the islands within the next week. Hone Makes its Move Tropical Storm Hone, the first named storm of the season, may pass just south of the Big Island this weekend, bringing with it gusty winds, heavy rain, and potential flash flooding. The storm is forecast to strengthen slightly and could reach hurricane status as it skirts the southern coastline.

Key Impacts from Hone: Gusty winds reaching 40-60 mph, with isolated gusts up to 80 mph possible on the Big Island. Heavy rainfall, with accumulations of 1-2 inches expected across the islands. Localized areas, particularly windward slopes on the Big Island and Maui, could see 2-4 inches or even 8-16 inches.

Flash flooding and mudslides are a significant concern, especially in windward locations. AccuWeather RealImpactTM Scale: While a direct hit is not anticipated, the storm’s size and potential impacts warrant a RealImpactTM Scale rating of less than 1 (meaning minimal to no impact). However, residents should remain vigilant and prepared for potential disruptions.

Hurricane Gilma on the horizon Just as Hone departs, another threat emerges. Hurricane Gilma, currently a Category 3 storm, is forecast to approach Hawaii later next week. However, cooler water temperatures could weaken Gilma significantly before it reaches the islands.

Potential Impacts from Gilma: Depending on the weakening process, impacts could range from showers and thunderstorms to gusty winds. The Big Island is likely to experience the most significant impacts. Rough seas and surf are anticipated, posing a danger to swimmers and boaters.

A Rare Double Threat The back-to-back arrival of two named storms is a rare occurrence for Hawaii. While tropical cyclones passing near the islands are not uncommon, especially in August (the peak season), having two within a week is historically unusual. Stay Prepared Residents are urged to closely monitor weather updates and follow advisories from local authorities.

Be prepared for potential power outages and flooding. Stock up on essential supplies and have a plan in place in case of evacuation. Looking Ahead While the immediate focus is on Hone and Gilma, a third tropical system may develop and threaten Hawaii in the following ten days.

Stay tuned for further updates on the evolving weather situation..
