Netflix is on the brink of expanding its beloved franchise based on the South Korean hit series. The first season of Squid Game was released in 2021, leaving millions of fans eagerly awaiting the sequel. The second season is slated to premiere more than three years later on December 26, with a third and final installment due next year.
However, this won't signify the end of the saga as Netflix has long been rumored to be gearing up for an English-language adaptation. After over a year of speculation, it's now reported that renowned director David Fincher, known for Zodiac and Gone Girl, is tied to the spin-off, tentatively titled Squid Game: America, reports the Express . This news was initially hinted at by Jeff Sneider back in April 2023.
In June of this year, The Playlist backed up the rumors, stating "Fincher has been quietly working on [an English-language] Squid Game for the last two years or so". They also suggested he "even has a writer working on it: British writer Dennis Kelly," famed for the Channel 4 thriller Utopia. This week, Deadline has claimed that the Squid Game spin-off is making even more headway.
"[Squid Game: America] is likely the project Fincher commits his time to in 2025," they reported. Initial rumors suggested the English-language derivative would either be a film adaptation or a remake of the first season. However, industry insiders such as Daniel Richtman and others are now suggesting that the series will span a full season set in the same univer.
