Herbison has now revealed that the reason behind Moloney's departure was the natural progression of the show. 'We want to keep viewers on their toes, while also progressing storylines in a natural way.

'Just recently we welcomed Harold back to the show, as a semi-regular character rather than full time. So much for him drowning in 1991,' he said.

Speaking with Aussie soap opera website Back to the Bay recently, Moloney said that he was grateful that the choice to leave had been made for him. 'Well, it actually wasn't my choice.

It was their choice,' he told the publication. He admitted that he had been wanting to leave the soap for 'some time' but its lure had proved too great to resist. 'I've been wanting to leave for quite a long time, but Neighbours is one of those jobs that you work with awesome people.

You get paid really well. And if you had a mate who had one of these jobs, you'd be saying, "oh, mate, what are you doing? You've got to stay there. See it out for as long as you can",' he said.

Moloney added that while he had wanted to move on for some time, he had always found it hard to say 'no'. 'So I'm quite grateful that they actually made that decision for me because I don't think that I could ever say no to a contract.'
