Neena Gupta has expressed her disappointment with the findings of the Justice Hema Committee, which highlights the persistent discrimination and exploitation of women in the Malayalam film industry. In an interview with NDTV, she shared her scepticism about the effectiveness of the report, stating, “I’m sorry, I’m going to be very pessimistic about it. I don’t think it will happen in our country.

” The Justice Hema Committee report, released in August 2024 by the Kerala government, underscores serious issues such as the casting couch phenomenon, inadequate facilities on film sets, pay inequalities and the social ostracism faced by those who resist exploitation. Gupta lamented the ongoing challenges of women's safety, emphasizing that making committees does not ensure safety for women travelling alone, particularly at night.
