Pune: Baramati MP Supriya Sule on Saturday said even BJP ’s alliance partners supported the opposition ’s stand on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024, which was transferred to the joint parliamentary committee (JPC) after the uproar. “Now, there is no more a Modi govt at the centre, but it is an NDA govt. The higher number of opposition members in Parliament has increased the opposition’s strength.

We saw some of the BJP’s alliance partners also taking a stand in favour of the opposition in opposing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar’s parties told Centre to reconsider the bill. I thank them for it publicly,” Supriya said in Pune on Saturday.

Union minister of parliamentary affairs and minority affairs Kiren Rijiju had introduced the bill in Parliament on Thursday. According to govt, the Waqf (Amendment) Bill aims at modernising the management of Waqf properties by enhancing women’s rights, ensuring equitable representation on the Central Waqf Council and Waqf boards, and reducing litigation. The bill was referred to the joint parliamentary committee (JPC) after the opposition parties registered a strong protest against it.

Supriya, who was one of the MPs to oppose the bill, said, “They (BJP) are in power for some time now but they have failed in delivering good governance. As a result, their numbers are now reducing. They even have to withdraw some bills in Parliament.

” Deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had on Friday criticised the opposition,, especially the Congress party,, for opposing the bill in Parliament. He had said the Congress was only interested in grabbing Waqf land, which is why they were against the bill. “It was a very important bill to bring transparency in the working of Waqf boards’ functioning.

The Congress party, however, does not want that transparency. They are only interested in grabbing the land of Waqf boards,” the deputy chief minister had said in Pune. Amid reports of rift between the MVA partners on projecting CM face for the assembly polls, Supriya said, “In a democracy, every party has the right to express its point of view.

As far as our party is concerned, we are not claiming any post and we do not even think that such a face is needed for the elections.” “There was no PM face (by UPA) but Manmohan Singh’s govt did really well in both the terms. This time, they (NDA) contested polls projecting the PM (Modi) as the face of the alliance but their seats were reduced,” Supriya said.
