Pune: Nazare dam is among the five resrvoirs in Bhima basin to have 100% water in stock in the ongoing monsoon season because of satisfactory rainfall , after reporting 0% live water storage the whole of last year. All five dams had failed to reach their full capacity last monsoon. Meanwhile, water in Nazare dam had continued to be at 0% till June, but the level rose because of consistent rain over the last two months.

On Friday, the current storage stood at the dam’s full capacity of 0.60 TMC. The development comes as a great piece of news to farmers in areas of Saswad and Purandar, which were reeling under water scarcity during the summer months.

Irrigation department officials said widespread rainfall this year had pushed up water levels even in dams located in areas that geographically receive very less rain, like Ujani and Visapur dams. Key dams that had failed to reach 100% capacity last season, but are full this time are Temghar (where water levels had reached only 88% last year), Mulshi (had 98% storage), Ujani (which had hit only 60% of its capacity) and Vir (which was at 63%). The four dams had water overflowing this monsoon, prompting discharge.

An official said, “We are monitoring water levels in all the five dams. Storage is being maintained around the full capacity. Another spell of rain is expected over the next two weeks, and it will help maintain levels near the 100% mark.

Catchments of most dams have received rainfall much more than last season’s.” A.
