India's rich heritage is often celebrated and today is one such day that calls for celebration. Today marks National Handloom Day, a day that recognizes the contribution of handloom weavers to the nation's economy and culture. Indian fashion would be incomplete without handloom weavers.

Actress Sagarika Ghatge , who has also started her fashion line, has unveiled her new collection on the day to celebrate the artistry of weavers. "Our heirloom weaves are amongst our nation’s greatest intangible assets. It’s heartening to see India’s weavers and craftsmen gaining recognition internationally in recent years.

However, celebrating days like today — National Handloom Day — gives us reason to take pause and acknowledge the rich history of textile in India and think of the many ways we can support our weavers and artisans . Handwoven garments are not just kinder to the environment but also much more comfortable to wear in the Indian climate and, unlike synthetic and machine-woven fibres, age gracefully through the years. The beauty of each handwoven piece is that it is unlike any other — the slight imperfections and irregularities give it a character that is uniquely its own," Sagarika shares.

Sagarika's fashion line - Akutee's new collection Nostalgia is all about lauding the craftsmanship of handloom weavers. "With this collection, we’ve fused the classic comfort and timeless style of heirloom Indian weaves with contemporary festive trends such as jewel tones and metallic hues. The pieces feature elegant cuts and hand painted art, inspired by the hues and forms of the natural world.

At its very heart, Nostalgia is the epitome of quiet luxury — it speaks to the sentiment of less being more, of the intersection of couture and art, and the eternal lightness of being that’s synonymous with the festive season. We hope that the wearer too experiences the handmade love that’s been woven and painted into each garment," the Chak De India actress concludes..
