Monday, August 26, 2024 Over the past year, Nashville International Airport (BNA) has witnessed a daily average of 4,352 travelers arriving or departing on international flights, highlighting the city’s robust demand for international connections. Responding to this growing interest, Southwest Airlines recently unveiled plans to introduce two new international routes from BNA to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. They are not alone in recognizing Nashville’s potential as an international hub.

An emerging player in the market, yet to be publicly named, is also looking to establish a direct European connection, with Nashville as the chosen point of departure. The Business Journal reports that this initiative is on the cusp of approval, pending a green light from the airline’s headquarters. If successful, this would mark the first new European route since British Airways launched its London service in 2018.

Doug Kreulen, CEO of the Metro Nashville Airport Authority, chose not to disclose the airline’s identity but indicated that an official announcement might be imminent. Speculations by Ishrion Aviation suggest that either Discover Airlines, eyeing a Frankfurt route, or Aer Lingus, considering Dublin, could be the potential carriers. Discover Airlines recently faced operational hiccups with fleet reductions impacting route commitments.

However, a recent announcement from its parent company, Lufthansa, about fleet expansion starting in 2025 could revive these plans. Aer Lingus, after resolving a pilot dispute, is also expected to resume talks with BNA regarding direct Dublin flights. Furthermore, BNA is ambitiously seeking to establish routes to Asia, considering major carriers like All Nippon Airways for Japan and Turkish Airlines for Turkey as potential partners.

This expansion drive is supported by a significant upgrade at the airport, including the addition of six international gates and an expansion of the customs and immigration facilities, part of a multibillion-dollar development plan. Additionally, the Metro Nashville Airport Authority has allocated $8.8 million in incentives to attract international carriers, offering rent waivers and covering various operational costs.
