Sunday, September 8, 2024 Muskegon County Airport in Michigan is set to undergo major upgrades aimed at revitalizing its infrastructure and increasing passenger traffic. The planned improvements include enhancements to both the terminal and airfield, ensuring the facility meets modern Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards. The goal is to bring passenger numbers back to pre-pandemic levels, as the airport has seen a significant decline in recent years.
Located in Norton Shores, near Lake Michigan, Muskegon County Airport used to serve around 40,000 passengers annually before the pandemic. However, that figure has plummeted to just 5,000—a staggering 80% drop. To address these challenges and improve service, the airport has taken several steps, including changing airlines and planning substantial infrastructure upgrades.
Previously, the airport faced difficulties, especially during winter months. Flight cancellations became frequent, with 43% of flights being scrapped during the winter due to operational struggles. The airline’s use of 9-seater, single-engine commuter planes proved problematic in the challenging weather conditions of the region.
As a result, the airport opted for a new partner. The new airline, which operates larger regional aircraft, is expected to bring greater reliability and efficiency to the airport’s operations. The carrier uses jets capable of carrying 30 to 50 passengers, allowing for increased capacity per flight.
These jets can also fly over Lake Michigan, significantly reducing flight times between MKG and ORD from 1 hour and 20 minutes to just 35 minutes. This improvement not only benefits passengers with more convenient scheduling but also enhances aircraft utilization, making the route more profitable. In preparation for the projected increase in passenger traffic, Muskegon County Airport is investing $24 million in infrastructure upgrades.
Of this, $2.7 million will go toward enhancing the terminal, including a new roof to improve energy efficiency, a modernized front facade, new airside bathroom facilities, a restaurant, and 17,000 square feet of new carpeting. The remaining $21.
3 million will be allocated to revamping the airport grounds, which will include the construction of a new taxiway with updated signage, lighting, and other features to meet FAA standards. These developments are expected to help Muskegon County Airport recover from the pandemic-related decline in passengers and improve its overall service and reliability. By upgrading its facilities, the airport aims to position itself for future growth and success.
