Riccardo Pes's performance follows the tribute piece, entitled Lament for the Tree, that he created when the famous tree was originally felled. That piece was featured by the BBC and helped raise funds for replanting. After the performance of his new composition, entitled New Life Springs, the cellist will be embarking on a residency in the Northwest Highlands GeoPark in Scotland.
The Music and Nature residency, funded by the National Lottery and Arts Council England, will see Mr Pes create a collection of compositions based on the culture and scenery of Scotland. Mr Pes will perform folk concerts in Glasgow and take a tour of scenic Scottish locations including Kylesku, Ullapool, and the Summer Isles as part of the residency. He will also work with regional musicians and outdoor rangers, to gain inspiration for his compositions.
Mr Pes said: "I will be diving deep into Scotland’s folk traditions and landscapes, considering climate action and the natural world as I write, inspired by the breath-taking sceneries across the Northwest Highlands of Scotland.” Stephen Johns, artistic director of the Royal College of Music, said: "Riccardo was a distinguished student at the Royal College of Music between 2016 and 2018, with solo, chamber, and large ensemble performances of note and distinction. "His personal journey as a musician has seen him combine his skills both as performer and composer, and increasingly in music and performance that is inspired by location and by nature.
