Pune: A murder convict was arrested by the Pune Rural police on Wednesday on the charge of bludgeoning a 32-year-old woman to death. According to the police, the deceased woman ran a mess in Wadgaon Maval area. The incident came to light on Tuesday evening after the woman's body was found at a nursery behind a temple in the same area.

A police team led by inspector Kumar Kadam took the accused, Salim Khan (35), into custody before he could flee from the district. "Khan was produced before a local court on Wednesday and remanded in police custody till Nov 18," Kadam told TOI. He said Khan was earlier arrested in a murder case registered with the Nagpada police in Mumbai.



"He got convicted in that case and stayed in prison from 2007 to March 2022. The exact reason behind the murder is being probed. The accused, however, claimed that he killed the woman as the latter was demanding money from him," Kadam said.

"After being released from the prison, Khan came to Wadgaon Maval and started working as a daily wage worker. The woman's husband is a construction worker, while she sold plastic bags on the roadside and used to run a mess in her home. As Khan lived alone in Wadgaon Maval, he joined the woman's mess," the officer added.
