Monday, October 7, 2024 The inaugural phase of Mumbai’s Aqua Line metro is set to begin operations on October 6, 2024, connecting the Bandra Kurla Complex business district to Aarey JVLR. This new line, celebrated for its connection through one of India’s longest underground stretches at 33.5 km, was officially launched today with an inaugural run from the Aarey JVLR station.
The Aqua Line boasts 31 state-of-the-art, lightweight metro trains, each comprising eight cars. These modern trainsets are a result of one of the largest rolling stock contracts in India’s urban sector, completed by a major global transportation firm. The contract also includes comprehensive signalling solutions, such as: The design of the metro trainsets, themed “Dynamic Fluidism,” draws inspiration from Mumbai’s vibrant energy and diverse architectural styles.
Designed to maximize space and comfort, the trains offer a high-density interior layout and accessibility features like dedicated wheelchair spaces. These trains are designed to carry over 3,000 passengers per trip, serving more than 1.6 million commuters daily.
Enhanced safety measures include facial recognition CCTV systems, smoke detectors, emergency intercoms, and fire extinguishers, among others. The spacious doors and multiple grab rails ensure ease of movement and safety in emergencies. Featuring 75% motorization for efficient acceleration and deceleration, these metro cars mark a first in India, boosting operational efficiency.
