Tuesday, August 20, 2024 MTR Corporation is delighted to share the successful inauguration of the Sydney Metro extension, completed by its subsidiary Metro Trains Sydney (MTS) on 19 August 2024. This new route seamlessly links Northwest Sydney to the Central Business District (CBD) through innovative twin railway tunnels under Sydney Harbour. The launch signifies a pivotal achievement in the evolution of Sydney’s public transit, enhancing the city’s connectivity.

Under MTS’s management, the new 15.5 km stretch joins the operational North West Line, expanding the total network to 51.5 km and rebranding it as the “M1 Metro Northwest & Bankstown Line.

” This expansion allows more commuters to traverse Sydney Harbour during peak hours than both the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Tunnel combined, with trains running every four minutes at peak capacity. In addition to local growth, MTR Corporation has been advancing its international and Mainland China ventures, promoting superior railway management to fortify its market presence and elevate the Hong Kong brand. As part of the Northwest Rapid Transit Consortium (NRT), MTR has extended its scope in the Sydney Metro North West Line through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) since 2019, which includes new metro trains, core rail systems for the CBD extension, and an operations and maintenance package until 2034.

“We are very pleased to see the smooth and successful launch of the new metro extension into the heart of Sydney’s CBD. This state-of-the-art fully automated railway service delivers significant time savings for passengers on their daily journeys and will play an important part in the growth and development of the city. Working closely together with the NSW State Government and our partners, MTR is proud to have contributed its Hong Kong and global expertise to this railway line including project works, such as the integration of the new extension with the existing North West Metro Line, through to testing, commissioning and the commencement of passenger service,” said Dr Jacob Kam, Chief Executive Officer of MTR Corporation .

Plans are underway to further extend the M1 Metro Northwest & Bankstown Line from Sydenham to Bankstown, converting the existing T3 Bankstown Line to metro standards. Once complete, this line will span 66 km and include 31 stations. Marking its 15th anniversary of operations in Australia, MTR started with Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) in 2009, which now serves millions in Melbourne across over 220 stations.

The company’s dedication to quality and reliability is reflected in the Sydney Metro North West Line’s impressive 98% customer satisfaction and 99% service reliability rates. With a dedicated team in both Sydney and Melbourne, MTR continues to commit to excellent service and fostering strong community relationships in Australia, ensuring the finest travel experiences for its passengers..
