Saturday, November 9, 2024 MSC Cruises has been honored by Condé Nast Traveler’s annual “Bright Ideas in Travel” list for its Super Coral Program, a groundbreaking coral restoration initiative centered on its private island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve in The Bahamas. The “Bright Ideas in Travel” list, launched by Condé Nast Traveler in 2022, celebrates the most forward-thinking projects in the travel industry, spotlighting those that tackle urgent travel challenges through innovation, impactful solutions, or redefining tourism practices. MSC Cruises’ inclusion highlights its dedicated, long-term strategy for marine conservation through the Super Coral Program.

Run by the MSC Foundation—the not-for-profit philanthropic arm of MSC Group—the Super Coral Program is part of the cruise line’s mission to counter coral decline and protect marine ecosystems. Within the 64-square-mile protected waters surrounding Ocean Cay, this initiative advances research on “super corals”—thermally resilient coral species that show promise for survival amid rising ocean temperatures. The program’s coral nursery currently nurtures 550 specimens from five coral species and 12 genotypes, each selected for resilience to heat stress.

Researchers believe these super corals could be key to enhancing coral reef resilience and preserving reefs under threat from climate change. This accolade closely follows MSC Cruises’ stellar performance in the 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards.
