Hundreds of motorists are facing hefty fines after a major motorway crackdown saw dozens of vehicles impounded in the run-up to Christmas . Over 500 speeding offences were recorded, alongside numerous instances of drivers without insurance on the M5, which slices through the Midlands. Avon and Somerset Police arrested 14 people and seized 109 vehicles during a targeted week-long operation against perilous and uninsured driving.

The action took place from 11 November to 15 November, with patrols conducted in various locations including Portishead, near Bristol Airport, Milverton, Minehead, Frome, and Bath. Utilising Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras, the force identified 521 speeding offences and a raft of other rule violations. Inspector Matt Boiles, from Avon and Somerset Police's Roads Policing Unit, commented: "Thanks to the support of all teams involved, we took many dangerous drivers off our roads in November.

We're determined to clamp down on these dangerous and unacceptable behaviours, and continue to do so every day, to protect other road users and pedestrians from harm." Avon and Somerset Police have pledged to continue tackling insurance offences robustly, as part of their commitment to enhancing road .
