MISSOULA — With a 4-3 edge in shootout penalty kicks, the Sacramento State women's soccer team stunned top-seeded Montana Friday afternoon in a Big Sky Conference tourney semifinal at South Campus Stadium. The Grizzlies bowed out at 12-3-4. Fifth-seeded Sac State will play second-seeded Idaho in the championship match in Missoula on Sunday at 1 p.
m. The winner will advance to the NCAA tournament, which starts Friday. The Hornets, who tied the Grizzlies 0-0 three weeks ago in California, had more shots in regulation time Friday, 13-10.
But Montana, bolstered by a supportive crowd of more than 1,100 fans, remained persistent on defense and the game stayed scoreless for 110 minutes of 11-versus-11 action. Scoring in the shootout for UM were Maddie Ditta, Charley Boone and Chloe Seelhoff. Sac State's keeper made two saves and the Hornets' Sydney Sharts booted the shootout clincher with the score knotted at 3-3.
Idaho advanced with a come-from-behind win over sixth-seeded Portland State (4-9-5) on Friday, 2-1, in Missoula. The Vikings jumped to a lead early in the second half before surrendering goals to Jadyn Hanks in the 72nd minute and Sara Rodgers in the 77th minute. Montana beat defending Big Sky tourney champion Idaho four weeks ago in Missoula, 2-1.
Jen Estes scored both of the goals for the Grizzlies and all three goals were scored in the first 15 minutes..
