THIS is the moment that handcuffed political hopeful Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch was handed to gardai over the infamous Regency Hotel attack. The never-before-seen picture shows Spanish cops taking the dishevelled crime boss from a car at Madrid airport ahead of gardai escorting him back to Dublin on a military flight in September 2021. Now, more than three years on from his extradition, Hutch is set to return to Ireland this week in different circumstances, after confirming he is making a bid for the Dail in the General Election .
Despite the 61-year-old Dubliner’s latest arrest over alleged money laundering as part of a Spanish probe, he was released on €100,000 bail last Monday. Hutch is due to land back in Dublin from Lanzarote to lodge his electoral papers as early as today. He stated: “I am running.
I will be a candidate in Dublin Central and I will be the people’s choice. They have asked me to run, so I am running.” The Monk is said to be even more determined than ever following his release from his latest incarceration.
And he is believed to have up to 100 people willing to volunteer for his campaign. Although Hutch has been living more openly in recent years, he still has security concerns and therefore will not be knocking on every door in his constituency. Social media, a strategy which has seen Simon Harris become known as a ‘TikTok Taoiseach’, is going to be central to Hutch’s bid.
It is expected that Hutch will release his manifesto in the coming .
