Representative photo AIZAWAL: Baptist Church of Mizoram (BCM), the second-largest church denomination in the state, has called for a baby boom to avert “disaster” for the Christian-majority state. The appeal was sent out at a recent meeting of the 129th assembly of the highest decision-making authority of BCM to married couples among church members to conceive more babies. BCM’s call comes against the backdrop of falling birth rates in the state with a population of over 12 lakh and unceasing inflows of illegal immigrants, many of them Buddhist Chakmas from Bangladesh.

“If the Mizos witness a decrease in population as the current trend (shows), it will be have an adverse effect on society, the state as well as the religion and church. We have to create awareness,” an agenda passed by delegates said..
