Jim Mickle, showrunner of Netflix’s “Sweet Tooth” series, will pen and direct the live-action adaptation of iconic Japanese anime and toy franchise “Gundam” for Legendary and Bandai Namco Filmworks. One of the cornerstones of all anime, the internationally renowned franchise spans 83 animated series and movies while its toys generate over $600 million annually. This will mark its first live-action film and is looking to start production in early 2025.
Mickle will also produce with his partner Linda Moran through their company Nightshade. Both Netflix and “Kong: Skull Island” director Jordan Vogt-Roberts were attached to a previous incarnation of the project – both are no longer involved. Created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the property is the pioneer of the mecha genre of IP.
The original series began in 1979 and is set in the Universal Century, an era in which people have emigrated to space colonies because of a growing population on Earth. Those living in the colonies seek their autonomy and launch a war of independence with battles fought by piloting robots known as mobile suits. Mickle’s previous directed films include “Stake Land,” “We Are What We Are,” and “Cold In July”.
He also created the acclaimed series “Hap and Leonard”. Source:.
