Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer ‘s memoir, True Gretch , jumped to the top of the New York Times Bestseller list amid speculation of a potential vice presidential bid. Despite her emphatic denials, the governor has been subject to rampant rumors of a potential 2024 presidential bid for months, as some Democrats and donors pushed for her as an alternative to President Biden.

Now that Democrats are rallying around Vice President Kamala Harris following Joe Biden’s decision to bow out of the race, Whitmer is being touted as a possible pick for the vice presidency . Whitmer co-chaired Biden’s reelection campaign and has signed on to the same role for Harris’ campaign, but she flat-out denied interest in being Harris’ #2, saying “I am not leaving Michigan.” Whitmer’s denials haven’t dampened enthusiasm around the governor, as True Gretch jumped to #3 and #4 on the Times ‘ Combined Print & E-Book Nonfiction and Hardcover Nonfiction lists, respectively.

It’s the only book in the top 10 that’s new to the lists this week. The memoir was published on July 9 by Simon and Schuster and is subtitled “What I’ve Learned About Life, Leadership, and Everything in Between.” It also sits at number 14 on Amazon’s nonfiction charts .

The memoir is a lean 176 pages, and delves into consequential moments in Whitmer’s governorship, now in its second and final term. In a candid and often humorous tone, she writes about Michigan’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and other moments in her career and life. She discusses tangling with the Trump White House to secure FEMA money and PPE during the pandemic, as well as the plot by a right-wing militia group to kidnap her, which was foiled by the FBI.

The memoir is in e-book or hardcover formats. The audiobook version, narrated by Whitmer, is available through Amazon with a two-month free Audible Premium Plus trial . The memoir can also be found at Barnes & Noble , Bookshop.
