Filmmaker Michael Mann himself made a welcome surprise appearance on Saturday night at American Cinematheque’s screening of his 2006 film “Miami Vice” at the Egyptian Theater in Los Angeles. Hosts Katie Walsh and Dark Horizons alum Blake Howard introduced the screening with Howard asking Mann for any update he could give on the “Heat” sequel. Mann is currently prepping the follow-up to his legendary 1995 crime drama with a recent novel he co-wrote with Meg Gardiner, serving as the basis for the film, which is both a prequel and sequel to the original.

In regards to where it currently stands, Mann says: “I’m working on the script like seven days a week and...

it’s large. It’s as large as the original, which was 2 hours 45 minutes. Some of what the characters do is.

.. beyond the novel itself, particularly the Chris Shiherlis character in the fourth part of it, the last act of it.

We shoot in Paraguay in Ciudad del Este where we shot for a number of days on this picture [“Miami Vice”], it’s a very wild place. Also in Mexicali, Chicago, LA and then in south-east Asia – probably Bhutan.” Sadly Mann didn’t discuss casting which has been widely speculated about with Austin Butler and Adam Driver rumored for younger incarnations of Kilmer and De Niro’s characters from the original.
