Summary Aeromexico introduces new Miami to Cancun route using fuel-efficient Boeing 737 MAX 8, offering daily flights starting December 19, 2024. With ample supply and high demand, Aeromexico's expansion into leisure routes in the US market generates increased competition for consumers. Recent growth allows Aeromexico to branch out and compete with US airlines, offering customers better cost structure and new leisure destinations.

Aeroméxico is steadily making its way back into the US leisure travel market and has introduced a new route, which will start late in the year, using the Boeing 737 MAX 8. The route offers nonstop service from Miami to Cancun. New leisure route According to Ishrion Aviation , Mexico’s flag carrier will launch a new daily flight between Miami International Airport (MIA) and Cancún International Airport (CUN) .

The route will kick off on December 19th, 2024, with the following scheduled: AM427 Miami to Cancun departing at 7:55 AM and arriving at 9:55 AM. AM426 Cancun to Miami departing at 11:10 AM and arriving at 1:05 PM. The flight will cover a straight line distance of 533 miles.

The trip from MIA to CUN will take roughly two hours, and the return trip will take slightly less than two hours due to favorable winds. The airline has chosen to operate the fuel-efficient Boeing 737 MAX 8 on the new route. The aircraft is equipped with 166 seats, split into 16 business class and 150 economy class seats.

The aircraft will fly from Mexico City to Miami late at night, operate the morning flight to Cancun, and return to Mexico City after the return flight from Cancun. According to ch-aviation , the airline has 35 737 MAX 8 aircraft in its fleet, with two more awaiting delivery. It also has 20 of the larger MAX 9 aircraft, with four more on order.

If demand exceeds expectations, we could also see these variants operating along the route. While the route is in high demand, there is also an ample supply. Aeroméxico joins American Airlines, which has five daily flights from Miami to Cancun.

JetBlue also flies to Cancun three times daily. However, it departs from Fort Lauderdale. Simple Flying has contacted Aeroméxico for a statement on the new route.

Making moves The route is the second leisure route that Aeroméxico has recently launched. The airline launched flights from Manzanillo International Airport (ZLO) to both Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). While these moves aren’t surprising, it goes against how Aeroméxico operates in the US.

For years, the airline refrained from targeting leisure markets in the US. In fact, the majority of its travel in the US has been to and from Mexico City International Airport (MEX). Aeroméxico’s operations remained centered around MEX mainly because of its lack of size.

It couldn’t afford to be spread thin and lose out on slots in MEX, where it is the largest operator. The recent growth and expansion have allowed the airline to branch out and compete with other airlines, eventually benefiting the consumer. Aeroméxico has a better cost structure than its US counterparts, greatly benefiting customers looking to travel to these leisure destinations.

About Aeroméxico Aeroméxico is Mexico's flag carrier. It is based in Mexico City International Airport (MEX), with secondary hubs in Guadalajara and Monterrey. The airline was founded in 1934 but has only operated as Aeroméxico for the last 35 years.

The airline is one of the four founding members of the Star Alliance and works very closely with Delta Air Lines (which also owns a stake in the Mexican carrier), although the partnership is being scaled back somewhat. The airline flies to over 90 destinations across the US, South America, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia. Travel to Mexico declined in 2023, but recovery is expected in 2024.
