:Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited’s (HMRL) decision to collect parking fees at Nagole metro parking space received a strong backlash from the metro rail users. Some of them have also staged a protest at the Nagole metro station, expressing their disapproval. Until Tuesday, parking at the station was free.
However, on Wednesday, commuters who parked their bikes and cars were required to pay fees ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 120, depending on the duration of parking. Further complicating the situation for the metro users, parking staff directed commuters to download a mobile app, ‘Park Hyderabad,’ to obtain a parking ticket. Commuters criticised HMRL for this as they felt it was unreasonable to expect them to download an app while they were rushing to their offices.
“It’s absurd pricing. I go to college in the morning and return in the evening to collect my bike after at least 10-12 hours. I choose public transport not only for environmental reasons but also to save on petrol and time.
With such pricing, it will only drive away the few people who are trying to make a difference for the environment,” said Pragyna Varasi, a commerce student. Rajesh Karnam, a teacher, shared a similar sentiment. “This is government land; why should we have to pay for parking? The last-mile connectivity of the metro is still inadequate.
How do they expect people to pay more for parking than for the metro ticket itself? Bike taxis seem much cheaper now. And what about their 'park at own risk' sign? How can they charge us for parking but not take responsibility for the safety of our vehicles?” Speaking to Deccan Chronicle. an HMRL official said, “Starting August 25, parking fees will be collected at Nagole metro station, and from September 1, the charges will also apply at Miyapur metro station.
On Tuesday, the task was conducted on a trial at Nagole. There will be round-the-clock surveillance and app-based (QR code) payment options, which will be easy to use.”.
