A project to bring back the VR multiplayer game Marvel Powers United has been killed by Facebook parent company Meta. Citing copyright infringement, the Marvel Powers United VR revival project has been shut down. Meta kills Marvel Powers United again Started by a group of fans, the awesome revival project was created to allow players to access the discontinued Marvel game .
Using a level selection tool, the defunct multiplayer title was fully playable in offline single-player with unlockable characters, skins and more. However, Meta has swiftly shut down the project for violating its copyright. In a statement on the project’s Discord server , the team behind the revival explained the project will be completely removed in the following days.
“While we, in good faith, wanted to help legitimate game owners download the game as most had already uninstalled it at Meta’s request after shutdown, that ultimately ended up being a terrible decision as we were unintentionally infringing on the copyrighted files belonging to Meta Platforms,” the team said. “As would be expected, they’ve kindly asked us to take down this project and any infringing files.” Alongside the released single player tools, the team was also close to releasing its own multiplayer servers to bring back the game’s co-op play.
Unfortunately, that will no longer be happening. “Please don’t attack Meta Platforms or any of the original developers at Sanzaru for this as this is well in their right to do so and the mistake lies entirely with us,” the team pleaded. At the time of writing, the team is attempting to negotiate the project’s continuation with Meta and Sanzaru.
Stop Killing Games In the announcement, the Marvel Powers United VR revival project developers urged fans to sign the Stop Killing Games initiative. Created after the delisting of Ubisoft’s The Crew, the initiative aims to make developers turn their online dependent games into offline titles upon their discontinuation. This would mean that customers who purchased games would still be able to enjoy their purchases in some capacity.
“If this initiative was in place, this situation would not have happened and it’s sad to see that so many times games get killed off and fan projects get taken down,” the team said. Since developing Marvel Powers United, Sanzaru Games has continued creating great VR games. The Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest 3 exclusive Asgard’s Wrath 2 is a stunning example of VR in action, but we do wish the team’s Marvel game could be enjoyed again without issue.
