Mercedes-Benz will unify the next-generation S-Class and EQS sedans under a single nameplate by 2030, offering both ICE and electric powertrains. New Delhi: Mercedes-Benz is set to simplify its luxury sedan lineup by merging the next-generation S-Class and EQS models into a single nameplate. This strategic move is aimed at countering declining sales and simplifying its offerings.

The iconic S-Class will be available in both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) versions by 2030. The decision marks the end of the EQS moniker, which was introduced in 2021 for Mercedes’ flagship EV sedan. Unifying Luxury with Innovation The unification of the S-Class and EQS models reflects Mercedes-Benz’s intent to reduce the disparity between its ICE and EV versions, creating a cohesive brand identity.

According to Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius, both the ICE and electric variants of the next-gen S-Class will feature similar exterior and interior designs. However, while the designs will be aligned, the underlying platforms are expected to differ. The electric S-Class and the next-gen EQE are likely to be built on Mercedes’ forthcoming MB.

EA Large EV platform, whereas the ICE S-Class will continue on an updated version of the current MRA platform. Why is This Being Done? The decision comes at a time when both the S-Class and EQS models have experienced a significant decline in sales. In the first quarter of this year alone, S-Class sales dropped by 37%.

Additionally, Mercedes’ projections for EV sales in 2023 fell short, with EVs accounting for just 11% of global sales instead of the anticipated 20%. In response, Mercedes has adjusted its EV strategy, postponing its target of achieving a 50% EV share of sales from 2025 to 2030. Extended Lifespan for ICE Models As part of its revised strategy, Mercedes has rolled back its plans to become an EV-only brand by 2030.

The company now plans to extend the lifespan of key ICE models, investing in the electrification of existing engines to ensure they meet regulatory requirements well into the 2030s. This approach allows Mercedes to maintain its presence in the luxury ICE market while gradually increasing its EV offerings..
