A restaurant has popped up in one of Perth’s inner suburbs, offering traditional Spanish cuisine with a twist. Meninas Grill — named after Diego Velazquez’s 1656 masterpiece Las Meninas — is a 100-seat steakhouse and wine bar. The ‘100% gluten free’ restaurant officially opened on Beaufort Street, Highgate on October 23 — boasting a Spanish menu of tapas, mains and desserts.

Sergio Yibrin co-owns the restaurant with his partner Vanessa Dias and the pair have hired experienced staff to blend “authentic flavours and our own family recipes with a contemporary twist”. Yibrin’s favourite dishes created by the wondrous minds of head chef Nazwa Soraya and Spanish chef Felix Garcia include smoked steaks infused with Spanish spices, plus croquetas, cocido stews and arroz negro, or rice cooked in fish stock and squid ink, with seafood. Spanish bartender Cristian Pineda is serving up his signature cocktail entailing a mix of vermouth and rum.

The new eatery is open Wednesday and Thursday from 5-9pm, Friday and Saturday from 12-10pm and Sunday from 12-9pm. The transformed space was once home to Russell Blaikie’s iconic bistro Must Winebar..
