Not only do Erik and Lyle Menendez now have a chance at being freed from prison without serving a life sentence, but it might happen before Christmas. More has happened with the two brother’s trial in the last six weeks than in the 35 years of them being incarcerated for the murder of their parents. After heightened media attention and a heartbreaking plea from their family , the case was revisited.

Last week, Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón announced his decision to move forward with the resentencing . Jesic, the new judge assigned to the case, with the hearing date decided for December 11.



His decision allows for three possible ways the brothers can be freed. The first possibility would be to rescind their original sentence of life in prison without parole, which would need to involve the parole board and could take up to six months for anything to be finalized. The brother’s attorney Mark Geragos is already working on the second option would be clemency, which would allow them to walk free.

The third and most promising option, considering Gascón admitted that his office is open to chance, Jesic will sign off on changing the conviction from murder to manslaughter. This would allow the brothers to be freed immed.
