A thrilling week of competition at Wedmore and Mendip Golf Clubs saw both close finishes and standout performances, with champions crowned across divisions and long-standing trophies awarded in memorable fashion. It was an early start for many Seniors last Monday (September 30) as Peter Roberts held his Captain’s Day with a 9 o’clock shotgun start. It obviously suited him because he went on to score 37 points which was enough to win division 2 on countback from Dave Nelson with Andy Shepherd taking third spot.
The main trophy of the day, though, is the Barron Bowl and Ron Barron, first Seniors Captain, was there to present it. There to receive it was Terry Clark who finished a couple of shots clear of the field with 39 points. There were close finishes in all the other divisions with Kevin Vaux winning division 1 on 36, closely followed by Tim Harris and Jay James both on 35 points.
It was just as close in division 3 with Chris Loughlin winning on countback from Eddie Parlour with Alasdair Mcdonald a couple of shots back in third place. It has been a particularly good year for the Club’s A team this year in the Avalon League. Led by Jim Vearncombe they had already won division 2 of the League which along with promotion also qualified them for Finals Day, where the divisional winners all play against each other for the Western Daily Press Trophy at Mendip Spring.
In a remarkably consistent performance, all the pairings came in with either 38 or 39 points to take the trop.
