Login Anthony Pieri, head sommelier of Melbourne’s Gimlet , which has been crowned as having the best wine list in the country, says the key to success is paying the same level of attention to a young couple drinking by the glass as a high-roller who wants to crack open a $12,000 bottle. The Andrew McConnell restaurant took out Australia’s wine list of the year at a ceremony in Sydney on Monday, and also won the Victorian state title and the sommelier’s choice award.

Anthony Pieri, the head sommerlier at Gimlet, says he is focused on pairing wines with a guest’s experience and mood rather than the food on their plate. Luis Enrique Ascui Agnes , which is located in a heritage-listed former bacon factory in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley, came second overall, and Perth-based Gibney, which opened earlier this year, was in third place. Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards were established by Rob Hirst, OAM, and his late wife, Judy, with Tucker Seabrook in 1993.

Mr Pieri, who was born and raised in Chicago but now calls Melbourne home, is committed to making Gimlet financially accessible to everyone.
