Tuesday, September 10, 2024 Melbourne Airport has launched Australia’s first dedicated service to support passengers with disabilities and special access needs, taking a major step toward improving accessibility in air travel. The new service, called Airport Assist , introduces four Mobility Hubs strategically positioned throughout the airport. These hubs, staffed by Travellers Aid personnel, offer assistance to passengers as they move between car parks, check-in counters, baggage claim areas, and pick-up and drop-off zones.

Designed to complement existing airline mobility services, Airport Assist provides additional support at key locations across the airport. The initiative was informed by research conducted by Melbourne Airport to better understand the challenges faced by travelers with disabilities or access needs. The research showed that one in ten passengers requires some form of assistance, a figure expected to rise as the population ages.

Airport Assist addresses these needs by offering a variety of features, including accessible information, communication boards for non-verbal travelers, sensory packs, and participation in the Hidden Disability Sunflower Program. The service also offers buggy and wheelchair transfers to connect passengers with essential areas, such as the T4 ground transport hub and major airline terminals. Developed with industry partners, Airport Assist is set to transform the travel experience for passengers with disabilities.

While other Australian airports have mobility services, Melbourne Airport’s comprehensive Airport Assist program is the first of its kind, setting a new standard for accessibility. This initiative is expected to be well-received and may encourage similar programs nationwide..
