Project Coal Founded in 2014 by 30-year-old artist Crystal Lee, Project Coal is a clothing brand that focuses on the exploration of natural dyes through one-of-a-kind textiles and objects. The label sells an assortment of garments and accessories, all made from natural fibres such as cotton, linen, silk, wool or hemp. Each piece is hand-crafted, and utilises plant-based extracts and pigments to tell a story.

The end result is one of earthy tones and unique textures, each different from the other. Notes Lee of her design philosophy: “I always remind myself that it is a slow process, and that I have to allow the canvas to ‘breathe’ in between rounds of dyeing.” She shares that her motivations primarily stems from wishingf to produce authentic and honest works, pieces that she would want in her own home.

It also serves as a from of self-expression to Lee, who prides herself on providing a bespoke experience for her customer. Studio Vetyver Studio Vetyver is a womenswear and menswear label founded by Pit Firdaus Aris that fuses contemporary styles with streetwear tropes. Unconventional design techniques are implemented into many of the seemingly-unassuming garments, such as a zero waste twisted drape design that creates volume and asymmetry while having a sustainable edge.

Pit shares his the importance of craftsmanship in his designs: “It is fundamental as it serves as the foundation and backbone in the execution of design. For me, craftsmanship does not only mean technical skills, but also the commitment towards a creative expression.” He also explains that his considered choice of fabrics is done through a reflection of the environment he is in—with each collection taking cues from various spaces and landscapes throughout Singapore.

Denise Chong Denise Chong is a 24-year-old beadwork artist and jewellery designer based in Singapore. Her interest in beadwork started during the pandemic, and her namesake label was launched in 2021 with its debut collection titled ‘Intrigue’. The label crafts occasion-wear garments made for multiple interpretations and imaginations, with an emphasis on attention to details.

It seeks to convey a feeling of intimacy with its wearer, and utilises unconventional materials that exposes the skin in their patterns and cutouts. “I really like how quality materials feel to touch, and the weight of the final product is something that matters a lot to me” shares Denise on the decision to work around beads. Each garment is sewn together using right-angle weaves, a painstaking technique that perfectly encapsulates what craftsmanship is about.

“I think a dedication craftsmanship elevates my work as I am able to edit the intricate details of my designs and make a work that is unique.” Her secondary ready-to-wear line Denise Chong Adornments would be available to shop at Boutiques, which translates the conceptual ideas of her main label into elevated everyday garments and accessories.
