The publication reported that Krein proposed at sunset on a cliff in Big Sur, California, a year after they first met.

His brother, Steven Krein, reportedly founded StartUp Health in 2011 and Howard serves as the chief medical officer of the organisation. Krein is currently an associate professor of otolaryngology at the Center for Digital Health and Data Science at Thomas Jefferson University. Krein studied at Rutgers University before receiving his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.

He also got a PhD in cell and developmental biology from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He’s no stranger to playing a medical advisory role to his father-in-law, having previously been an adviser to the Cancer Moonshot initiative, per the White House website.

The project began after Beau died of brain cancer in 2015. Cancer Moonshot aims to mobilise researchers across the US to prevent cancer before it starts. Per The New York Times, Krein also advised Joe’s presidential campaign on its healthcare policies during the coronavirus pandemic.

ABC News reported that Hari Prasad, the CEO of tech firm Yosi Health, asked Krein and StartUp Health to introduce its software to US government health officials. The software focused on streamlining Covid-19 vaccination efforts.

Commenting on the apparent conflict of interest, Robert Weissman, president of the liberal watchdog group Public Citizen, told CNN at the time that “the potential problems are real” and urged Joe and the rest of his family to cease discussing health policy with Klein. However, Jennifer Hankin, StartUp Health’s chief of staff, told the same publication that Krein doesn’t “advise or assist companies on obtaining government contracts”, while the White House added that it has a robust system in place to address possible conflicts of interest. Harris tried to sell the diary to Project Veritas, a far-right activist group. Although the contents of the diary have not been verified, some British media reports claimed that Biden wrote about her supposed marriage problems with Krein, even detailing an affair that she allegedly had in 2019. Harris was sentenced to one month in jail and three years of supervised release.

In a letter to the court, Ashley wrote that she was traumatised by the details of her personal life being made available online: “I will forever have to deal with the fact that my personal journal can be viewed online.
