Sunday, September 8, 2024 Meerut is set to receive next-generation coaches for its Metro as part of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor, revealed by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) . These modern coaches, sleeker and more advanced than those used in the Delhi Metro, promise a significantly enhanced commuter-friendly experience, featuring cutting-edge technology and superior design for improved passenger comfort and efficiency. Crafted from lightweight stainless steel , the energy-efficient coaches boast regenerative braking systems , reducing overall energy consumption by up to 30%.

In addition, these trains are equipped with advanced automatic train protection (ATP) and automatic train operation (ATO) technologies, which provide an extra layer of safety and automation, ensuring the train maintains optimal speed and stops in case of emergency. With a vibrant exterior in fluorescent green, blue, and orange , the trains reflect the dynamic spirit of modern India, showcasing a bold fusion of innovation and progress. The sleek aerodynamic design not only enhances aesthetics but also improves energy efficiency by reducing air resistance during travel.

The Meerut Metro trains are designed for a maximum speed of 135 kmph and will operate at 120 kmph , ensuring rapid and smooth commutes. The corridor spans 23 km and includes 13 stations , comprising 18 km of elevated tracks and 5 km of underground sections . Nine of the stations are elevated, three are underground, and one depot station will be at grade.

Despite the relatively short distance, the trains will cover this stretch in just 30 minutes , offering quick and seamless connectivity for the city’s residents and visitors. Each three-car trainset , designed to accommodate up to 700 passengers , includes 173 cushioned seats arranged in a 2×2 transverse and longitudinal layout for optimal comfort and space efficiency. The introduction of push-button door controls , similar to those found in the Vande Bharat Express , allows for selective door opening, further reducing energy consumption and improving operational efficiency.

In terms of onboard amenities, passengers will enjoy modern conveniences such as air-conditioning , luggage racks , USB charging ports , and CCTV cameras for enhanced safety. Additionally, dynamic route maps will offer real-time updates, ensuring that commuters are well-informed throughout their journey. The interior design emphasizes both comfort and functionality, with wide gangways, ergonomic seating, and ample standing space, making it ideal for short and medium-distance travel.

Furthermore, the Meerut Metro is also part of a broader plan to integrate with other transportation networks in the National Capital Region (NCR), ensuring seamless transfers between modes of transport like buses, taxis, and other metro services. This integration will play a crucial role in reducing road congestion and promoting eco-friendly urban mobility in one of India’s rapidly growing cities. Overall, these next-gen coaches and the introduction of the Meerut Metro underscore the city’s commitment to embracing sustainable urban transport solutions while significantly improving the commuting experience for residents and visitors alike.
