MEDIAPOLIS -- It is better to give than receive. But don’t tell that to Mediapolis head football coach Brian Borrison. Borrison’s Bulldogs swiped five of six Central Lee fumbles en route to a 48-14 Class 2A District 5 win on Senior Night at Mediapolis High School.
Mediapolis improved to 4-4 on the year and punched a one-way ticket to the playoffs. Central Lee fell to 4-4. Whenever the Hawks established any sort of offensive momentum, they were afflicted with the fumble bug.
A pair of Central Lee turnovers in the first quarter gave Mediapolis the ball in prime scoring position. “We were creating turnovers and that got the momentum going,” Borrison said. “Our goal is to mix up the run and pass.
We were more consistent with what we were doing.” Noah Schmidgall turned in another quality performance, scoring the first two of his three touchdowns in the opening period. Schmidgall turned in a nifty hop-skip-and a score from two yards away before plowing in from six yards away.
Apparently, a quick two touchdown lead wasn’t good enough as they retrieved Central Lee’s kickoff return after a third fumble. But Reese Campbell received the honors of finding the end zone on the first play of the second quarter. Central Lee coughed up the ball a fourth time, before Schmidgall found a gap in the interior of the Hawks’ defensive front and sprinted 71 yards for his third score.
About the only thing that went wrong for the Bulldogs in the first half was a missed extra point. Pa.
