LAKEVILLE — The Mayo High School football team has had its share of heartbreak over the years. However, Friday night might take the cake. It looked like the Spartans were on their way to a thrilling victory — one that would have been talked about for a while as Mayo overcame a 12-point fourth quarter deficit after Isaiah Beale scored on a 3-yard passing touchdown for a lead with just 28 seconds left.

ADVERTISEMENT But then South did the unthinkable. Known for their run-first 'T' formation, the Cougars uncorked two passes that netted them 73 yards. The latter of which came with a bit of controversy as the officials picked up a flag that appeared would have been on Lakeville South and would have wiped out the 58-yard gain.



There also was an argument the quarterback was past the line of scrimmage as well. Yet, at the end of the day, the officials have a difficult job and the tough decision was made to uphold the play that saw South reach the Mayo 2-yard line with just 2.2 seconds left.

Jonah Shine would then punch it in from 2-yards out as the clock expired for the walk-off touchdown to give South a 46-43 thrilling victory in front of a sold out homecoming crowd in Lakeville. It's the second time in three weeks the Spartans (2-3) saw a late fourth quarter lead slip away in gut-wrenching fashion. Still, coach Donny Holcomb was positive, lauding the effort of his group, especially after trailing by two possessions midway through the fourth quarter.
