In a first, toy manufacturing giant Mattel has released a new Barbie to help celebrate one of the largest Indian festivals of the year, Diwali. The Barbie Signature Diwali doll has been unveiled to represent the “fashion-forward modern Indian woman of today”. Released ahead of the Hindu festival of light, Diwali, the new Barbie doll adorns a traditional Indian outfit designed by world class Indian fashion designer, Anita Dongre.
The doll looks to pay homage to Anita’s heritage and the “time-honoured craftsmanship of the rural women artisans who sustain its traditions.” “Designing the Barbie Diwali doll has truly been a fun and fulfilling experience,” said Anita Dongre. “This Barbie Diwali doll represents the fashion-forward modern woman, who wears India on her sleeve with pride.

The newly released doll wears the Moonlight Bloom set which is a contemporary take on the traditional lehenga, while the outfit is paired with a Rajasthan-inspired koti vest, highlighted with nature-inspired motifs.
