Massive influx of baby boomers to southern state is creating a 'gray tsunami' By JAMES CIRRONE FOR DAILYMAIL.COM Published: 21:40, 11 November 2024 | Updated: 21:57, 11 November 2024 e-mail 9 View comments South Carolina's population is experiencing a boom - among baby boomers. In a few years, the southern state will have more people above the age of 64 than below the age of 18, The Post and Courier reported.

By 2040, more than third of residents will be 65 or older in five South Carolina counties, including coastal Beaufort, Georgetown, Horry and Jasper counties, as well as McCormick County on Lake Thurmond. With more older people moving to the state to live out their golden years, some areas count a third of their population past retirement age. 'That's stunning to hear, that some of the counties have gotten' there, said former Lieutenant Governor Glenn McConnell, who told the state Legislature a decade ago that they need to prepare for what he called 'the gray tsunami.
