WATERBURY – Mary Lou (Bernthal) Aston, age 94, of Waterbury, was called home to Our Lord on Monday, Oct. 28, 2024. She married Delbert R.
Aston in Milwaukee, Wis., in 1950. Delbert passed away in 1994.
Mary Lou was born March 26, 1930, in Stuttgart, Ark., daughter of the late Rev. Herbert T.
Bernthal and Lorena (Westfall) Bernthal. She worked as the manager of the footwear line in Uniroyal, Naugatuck, for nearly 20 years. When Uniroyal relocated, her son Gary and daughter Cindy enticed her to move to San Diego, where she resided.
She was hired as a quality control manager for Sandicast Corp. for eight years. When she returned to Connecticut, she was hired as property manager for Centre Bank and worked there until she retired.
She also worked part time at Bradlees and Shaker’s Ford. Mary Lou was a communicant of Cheshire Lutheran Church. As a young pastor’s daughter, she played the organ and sang in the choir.
Her beautiful voice sent many compliments her way from other parishioners. She also played basketball in the Walther League. She enjoyed an active social life and was blessed with many dear, lifelong friends.
She loved reading, playing cards, games, bingo and traveling weekend getaways and monthly bus trips to bingo at the casino. She was a huge fan of her sports, football, baseball and basketball. Her favorite was the UConn women’s basketball team.
She was a very hard working, loving mother with a strong constitution and set a wonderful example for her children..
