GRAND FORKS — Summer is winding down. But in North Dakota, it isn't over until it's over. Sure, hockey looms.

Football is drawing near. Golf courses are still calling — loudly. Right now the UND football team is warming up for games at the Alerus Center.



High school teams are off and running. And there's a crew of fans who enjoy Friday nights at River Cities Speedway. They are happy to watch the cars zoom around on Friday nights through September.

"Vroom. Vroom," is what they have to say! Ralph Engelstad Arena stands proudly as the home for North Dakota hockey. With its luxury seating, the Ralph awaits the crowds that find their way to the UND campus on long winter evenings.

ADVERTISEMENT The Ralph, as it is known, is what brings a sense of joy and pleasure to the Forks as well as the UND campus on weekends. It is an evening worthy of escape from the cold on long winter evenings. There's a sense of fun with the changing of the seasons around Grand Forks.

In the fall, potato and sugar beet trucks make their way through the cities. They drop off a few free samples here and there. And they present a message that all is well.

By now, the message that all is well has drifted into homes of the upper Red River Valley. At this point of late summer, people are stocking away dill pickles and canned tomatoes. The goodness of summer will linger on.

The time has come for another round of golf. Certainly more pickleball..
