Just Saying Actress Marie Mullen "wanted to put on theatre that was of our people, of the West of Ireland" Marie Mullen (71) was born in Sligo, the eldest of nine. A founding member of the Druid Theatre Company, with Garry Hynes and Mick Lally, she is married to the actor Seán McGinley. She won a Tony award for her portrayal of Maureen in the original production of ‘The Beauty Queen of Leenane’.

It was a very happy childhood and we were very close. My father worked with the Posts and Telegraphs, and my mother was the postmistress in Drumfin until she was 75. They were both terrific, kind, generous people.

My father always believed that we should be educated. He died of lung cancer when he was 60, in 1983. My mother went on until 2019, she was 95.

We had her as an influence throughout our lives. We were devastated to lose her. Join the Irish Independent WhatsApp channel Stay up to date with all the latest news.
