Mariah Carey says her mom, Patricia Carey, and her sister, Alison Carey, died over the weekend on the same day. In a statement to TODAY.com, the singer said that while she lost her mom over the weekend, her sister passed “in a tragic turn of events.

” Carey added that her "heart is broken." “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed,” Carey said in the statement. “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.



” No additional details regarding Patricia and Alison Carey's deaths have been released. Carey rarely shares insight into her relationships to her mom and sister publicly, though the singer did post an old photo with her mom for a birthday post on in February 2019. "Happy birthday to a true diva- my mom, Patricia Carey!" she captioned the post, adding three red heart emoji.

In her 2020 memoir, "The Meaning of Mariah Carey," the singer wrote that her mother was a Juilliard-trained musician who made a living as a voice and music coach. "Music was something we genuinely connected on, and without pushing or becoming one of those overbearing stage mothers or 'momagers,' she instilled in me the power of believing in myself," she wrote in her book. "Whenever I mused about what I’d do 'if I make it,' she would cut me short and say, 'Don’t say "if I make it," say "when I make it.

" Believe you can do it, and you will do it.'" Carey has previously posted about her father, Alfred Roy Carey's death. He died from cancer in 2002 at the age of 72, previously reported.

For Father’s Day in 2023, Carey shared an old on Instagram of her dad in what appeared to be a uniform and wrote, “Remembering my Father, the late Alfred Roy Carey ‘Shining like a sunflower up in the sky.’” In October 2022, Carey shared a of herself on social media sitting inside a red convertible car in honor of her dad's birthday.
