Thursday 19 September Māori and Pasifika designershave taken out the top honours at the 2024 PANZ Book DesignAwards, held in Auckland this evening. The supremeaward, the , went to by Jade Kake and Jeremy Hansen (MasseyUniversity Press), a tribute to the late architect RewiThompson. The book’s cover was designed by TyroneOhia and Eva Charlton from design agency Extended Whānau,and the interior by Tyrone Ohia, Eva Charlton, MaxQuinn-Tapara (Extended Whānau) and KatrinaDuncan.

Anna Brown is a New Zealand-based designer andtypographer. Working with visual artists, curators andmusicians she investigates through form, materials andtypography how the vehicle of the book can animate andamplify the content it contains. She is the Director of ToiĀria — Design for Public Good, a research unit harnessingdesign for positive social change.

Anna is a Professor atMassey University’s College of Creative Arts. Te Kani Price (Ngāti Tūwharetoa, TeWhakatōhea) is a Programme Manager and Creative Director atHUIA Publishers. Delivering daring book covers and interiorsfor the past decade that bring an authentically Aotearoaperspective.

Te Kani designs together with the in-house teamat HUIA with manaakitanga as its core value. In 2022 Te Kaniwon Emerging Designer at the PANZ Book DesignAwards. Chloe Blades is abookseller, social media manager and book club host at UnityBooks in Auckland, which won Best Bookshop in the World atthe 2020 London Book Fair.

Alongside reviewing books onTVNZ’s Breakfast Show, she has written for magazine and . Last year,Chloe received a RISE Booksellers scholarship to go to SanFrancisco and work at the Booksmith in Haight Ashbury. Chloeholds a BA(Hons) in English Literature from LoughboroughUniversity.

Simon Waterfieldis a designer at Lift Education, with expertise ineducational and literacy design and children’s publishing.Simon holds a Bachelor of Design from WellingtonPolytechnic/Victoria University and has twice previouslybeen a judge for the PANZ book design awards, as well asbeing shortlisted. He has chaired sessions with children’sbook creators Oliver Jeffers and Leo Timmers, and has been ajudge for The Arts Foundation’s Mallinson RendelIllustrators Award (2015 and2017).
