Cocke County Sheriff C.J. Ball said he expects to receive a detailed report in the coming weeks from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) on its investigation of an officer-involved shooting that occurred around 1 a.

m. Nov. 1 in Cocke County.



TBI issued a preliminary report Nov. 1 announcing it was investigating the shooting at the request of 4th Judicial District Attorney General James Dunn. TBI’s press release stated a driver refused to stop and led deputies on a pursuit.

Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle and take the driver into custody in the 1700 block of Neddy Mountain Road in Del Rio. At some point during the encounter, for reasons still under investigation, deputies fired shots, striking the driver. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

According to Ball, Bradley Grooms, 35, was apprehended early Friday, Nov. 1 after his vehicle was spotted driving without registration tags. Grooms was known to have an outstanding violation of probation warrant and authorities had been searching for him.

Grooms was on probation arising out of a conviction for assault. According to a Cocke County Sheriff’s Office Report of Nov. 26, 2021, Grooms was arrested on those charges when police observed him on Morrell Springs Road.

Grooms had several active warrants out of Cocke County for aggravated rape, aggravated assault and kidnapping. Grooms entered a residence on Morrell Springs Road and entered the bathroom. Police were able to take Grooms into custody an.
