Nagpur: A 46-year-old man, Siddhant Gulati, roped in two friends by offering them ₹1 lakh as supari to eliminate his maternal aunt , 57-year-old Karina Khurana, over property and business disputes. Gulati not only had a grouse with the victim over an ongoing property dispute , but had been miffed with her beauty parlour business outclassing his wife’s in the same locality. The target, however, survived the attempt on her life.

The two friends, both first timers in crime, had accepted a payment of ₹10,000 as advance, and also made a failed bid on August 1 to bludgeon the victim to death near NIT Garden in Trimurti Nagar. The two had surveyed the location and prepared for the murder for the past six months before zeroing down on the victim, who was lucky to survive multiple blows to her head with an iron rod. Gulati was arrested last week by the crime branch for allegedly offering ₹1 lakh to the alleged contract killers , Kunal Shambarkar, 33 and Sahil Kamble, 19.

Shambarkar and his kin Kamble were in need of money, so they had accepted the heinous contract. Senior inspector of crime branch Suhas Chaudhari said Shambarkar was the one who landed the blows on the victim while his cousin, Kamble, drove the two-wheeler borrowed from a friend. “The accused had changed the number plate of the scooter and taken multiple other precautions to remain incognito but their ploys failed,” said Chaudhari, whose team under the supervision of DCP crime Nimit Goyal, and CP Ravinder Singal, cracked the case.

The teams of Rana Pratap Nagar police station and crime branch were initially baffled, as neither the victim or her kin could name any suspect behind the attack.
